●Menpō (面頬)
A menpo is a type of facial armor used by samurai in feudal Japan. It covers the lower part of the face—typically the cheeks, jaw, and sometimes the nose—and was worn in conjunction with a helmet (kabuto) as part of a full suit of samurai armor (yoroi).
Menpo were usually made of iron or leather and often featured fierce or intimidating expressions, mustaches, or even detachable noses to strike fear into enemies. Some also had small holes near the mouth and nose for ventilation.
Beyond protection, menpo served a psychological purpose, enhancing the warrior's appearance and identity in battle.
