【About Kissa to Osake BORO】

“Kissa to Osake BORO” is a café operated directly by GALLERY KOGURE, established in February 2024. Housed in a nearly 100-year-old building constructed before World War II, it offers a unique space where visitors can enjoy art, coffee, drinks, and food.

Tucked away in a back alley that still retains the atmosphere of postwar Showa-era Japan stands a two-story wooden building believed to have been built around 1929. Once known as the “Shoshinsha Building,” its second floor was home to three major poetry publishers: Shoshinsha, run by the building’s owner Hitoshi Moriya; Eureka, founded by Tokuo Date; and Shichosha, founded by Hisao Oda. Working side by side in a space of only about 33 square meters and even sharing a single telephone, these publishers played a leading role in shaping modern Japanese poetry.

On the first floor was Rimbaud, a café opened by Hitoshi Moriya in 1947. It became a favorite haunt of writers such as Yukio Mishima, Shusaku Endo, and Junnosuke Yoshiyuki. In 1953, Milonga opened as its successor and became popular as a place where guests could enjoy Argentine tango, which was experiencing a boom in Japan at the time. The interior was partially renovated in 1995, and the café became what is now known as Milonga Nueva.

In 2023, Milonga Nueva relocated nearby, and the building was subsequently renamed “Nishi-Indokan,” the name it retains today. Preserving the historic brickwork that has survived the prewar and postwar eras, the economic bubble, and successive waves of redevelopment, BORO opened here in 2024.

GALLERY KOGURE, based in Jimbocho, presents works that have endured and reflected their respective eras, alongside works by contemporary artists shaping the present. We hope you will enjoy a relaxing moment surrounded by art.
